THAT MAY NOT BE JUST ANOTHER CHUBBY MERMAID AT THE END OF YOUR DOCK!!
Researchers have found that manatee have increasingly been visiting the North Carolina coast.
So those of you who think you might have seen a manatee swimming through marinas and waters in the Cape Fear region recently may not just be seeing things. There have been nine manatee sightings in North Carolina so far this year.
The large, vegetarian mammals that feed mainly on sea grass and fresh water begin to arrive in northern areas like NC as early as April and may stay as late as October.
Some manatee Dos and Don'ts: 1) Do NOT feed a manatee or spray it with a garden hose (they like the fresh water). While this provides you with a great opportunity to view this gentle giant, it will encourage the animal to stay in one place and puts them at a greater risk for injury. 2) Do NOT swim with a manatee or touch it. Just let nature be. 3) DO call and report sightings, and take a photo if possible, (scars and other unique features help researchers identify and track individual animals).
